Money 101: Get personal with your finances.

Where are you going this summer?
Summer is a great time to get out and explore your surroundings. Whether travelling abroad or staying stateside, visiting new and uncharted territory can be fun and educational. While all this adventure can get expensive, it doesn’t have to be. By traveling with a budget, you can still have an unforgettable summer without draining your pockets!

Planning
The old quote rings true when it comes to traveling, “a failure to plan is a plan to fail.” So, be sure to:
  • Set a budget to keep from overextending your finances. (See our Learn to love budgets article for more tips)

  • Shop around for the best deal to maximize the amount of money you’ll be able to spend once you reach your destination.

  • Book your trip early. The longer you wait, the more it will cost.

  • Create an emergency plan in the event your money is stolen or you go over budget. Before you leave, devise a way you can get money wired to you from friends and family in case of an emergency.
Get down with a discount
Companies like Student Universe and STA Travel specialize in serving the travel needs of students. They understand you’re on a budget and offer deals and discounts for college students, so take advantage.

Hostel takeover
Save money by staying in a hostel. It’s a great cheap way to travel, not to mention a great way to socialize with fellow travelers and get tips on local attractions that you might not be aware of. Find a list of hostels and their locations at Hostels.com.

Just ask. They’ll tell.
Once you reach your destination, be sure to ask locals and the front desk at your hostel or hotel about where to eat and things to do. Restaurants and shops around tourist attractions tend to have inflated prices. However, this is not the case with establishments favored by locals. Many hotel concierges also keep coupons for local restaurants, so don’t be afraid to ask!

The roads less traveled
While it’s fun to see the popular tourist attractions, why not throw some adventure in the mix? Lesser known historical sites and museums are just as interesting and often free.
