Historically, students have been underserved when it comes to financial services. This gap results in difficult and expensive options for receiving Financial Aid and other refund checks from the colleges and universities that students attend:
- Students who are unable to open or simply don’t have a banking account are hit with high fees at check cashing facilities.
- The passage of the CARD Act, new Reg E rules, and the transition to Direct Loans has accelerated the exodus of traditional banks from the student market.
- Traditional banks are now charging monthly fees or requiring minimum balances as they discover they can no longer offset the cost of checking accounts by selling more lucrative credit products.
